Once upon a time, not so long ago, local TV was one of the toughest things to replace with a streaming solution. Sure, it always made sense to cancel cable and save big bucks, but those of us who really love our local news broadcasts soon found that life without cable was a little less fun – or, at least, that’s how things used to be. These days, there are plenty of ways to watch local TV – including local news – without cable. And one of the best solutions is NewsOn.

NewsOn is a streaming service that offers live and on-demand content from local news stations all over the country. Since it streams this content over the internet, NewsOn can offer its users local news anytime, anywhere, and on a bunch of different devices.

NewsOn isn’t your only option for watching local TV without cable, of course – you should be sure to check out our coverage of skinny bundles and (in particular) free over-the-air TV when you’re done with this guide – but it’s a solid way to supplement your cord-cutting setup. Our complete guide to NewsOn is below, and includes links to our other relevant coverage.

What channels are on NewsOn?

NewsOn works by aggregating local newscasts from all over the country.

That means that NewsOn does not have TV shows or movies on it – it’s just news! And NewsOn does not feature around-the-clock live feeds of local stations, because it offers just the news (not the sitcoms, sports broadcasts, and other content that may air on the same TV channel as your local news does). For that stuff, your best bet is probably free over-the-air TV.

But NewsOn does offer live and on-demand content from local news broadcast teams. There’s a good chance that your local news team is one of the ones that you can watch on NewsOn!

Of course, NewsOn does not have a streaming deal in place with every last news team and station in the United States. There are some missing, so you’ll have to check to see if your news station is available. Fortunately, that’s easy to do – NewsOn is free to download and use, as we’ll discuss at greater length in just a moment.

All told, NewsOn has more than 200 news stations working with it. Newscasts remain available to watch on demand for 48 hours after their original air time.

What devices can I use to watch NewsOn?

NewsOn will appeal to cord cutters for a few reasons. Obviously, it’s appealing because it offers us a way to watch live and prerecorded news content without cable. It’s appealing because it is free, and because it offers great features that make it easy to find news broadcasts that are relevant to your region and your interests. And it’s appealing for one more reason, too: because you can watch it from anywhere on all sorts of different devices!

So, about those devices — which streaming platforms does NewsOn support? We’ve got the list below.

Streaming platforms and devices

  • Fire TV
  • Roku

Mobile devices

  • iOS
  • Android

Other

  • In-browser app (Mac, Windows, and more)

That’s not the longest list of supported platforms, and some key devices are missing. But NewsOn does offer support for both Android and iOS mobile devices, and it has options for your TV screen, too, thanks to its support for the Fire TV and Roku streaming platforms. It’s not an option for every last person using every last device, but it’s a solid alternative to cable and over-the-air solutions for local news.

How much does NewsOn cost?

One of the best things about NewsOn is its price: the app is free, and so is all of the content that you can stream on it!

On top of that, NewsOn doesn’t even seem particularly interested in getting its hands on your email or any other identifying details. You can stream as much as you want without having to make any kind of free account.

Deals on NewsOn

Cordcutting.com is your headquarters for great streaming deals, but our expertise is not needed with NewsOn: the service is already completely free! Just download the app or open up the service’s in-browser streaming app on your computer.

Getting a NewsOn free trial

There’s no such thing as a NewsOn free “trial,” because NewsOn is free for as long and as much as you’d like to use it! Again, all you have to do is download the app.

NewsOn contracts

Nope, no contracts, either: NewsOn is free! You don’t have to worry about commitment, payments, or cancellations with NewsOn. If and when you feel like deleting the app, you can.

How to cancel NewsOn

A lot of free streaming apps offer free accounts to help you track what you want to watch. But NewsOn uses your location to find nearby broadcasts and keeps things lightweight by skipping things like favorites or watchlists. There’s no account involved, so there’s nothing to cancel!

To get rid of NewsOn, then, all you really need to do is delete the app from the device(s) that you downloaded it to. That’s it!
